Nothing broken but serious abrasions for Belgian sprinter after Scheldeprijs crash
Leopard Trek’s Wouter Weylandt was one of the principle victims of the huge finishing straight crash in Wednesday’s Scheldeprijs. Although he suffered considerable abrasions as he rolled around the tarmac, he has suffered no broken bones and is still set to ride Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix, according to Sporza.
"I didn't sleep very well,” Weylandt told Belgian news agency Belga. “Which is logical as the skin from my left and right sides is stuck to the asphalt in Schoten. Fortunately, I didn’t hit my knee.”
Weylandt suffered from a number of knee injuries in recent years and is thankful that he hasn’t sustained another.
With serious abrasions on both sides, the Belgian sprinter will be in considerable pain when he rides on Sunday; nevertheless, he intends to carry on his preparation with the team as normally as possible.
"Naturally, it would be better for me to miss the course exploration on Friday, but it has been planned. I will definitely attend; I want to test my new bike; and I will do everything to be there on Sunday."
As one of Leopard Trek’s classics specialists, Weylandt will be a vital teammate for Fabian Cancellara as he seeks to defend his Paris-Roubaix title.
