Consolation for Cancellara with leadership of UCI WorldTour ranking

Italy best nation, RadioShack is top team
Yesterday may have been a particularly frustrating day for Fabian Cancellara, who was the strongest rider in Paris-Roubaix but who was out-manoeuvred by Garmin-Cervélo’s team tactics and the determined dash for victory by Johan Van Summeren. However he has received some consolation in taking over as the UCI WorldTour leader, effectively becoming world number one.
The Leopard Trek rider has had a remarkable run in the Classics, netting second in Milan-San Remo, third in the Ronde van Vlaanderen and second in Paris-Roubaix, and becoming the first rider to take a podium position in all three in over two decades. While the victory has eluded him, these results have helped elevate him above the previous leader, Matt Goss (HTC Highroad).
Cancellara now has 236 points, 33 more than his Australian rival. Vuelta al Pais Vasco winner Andreas Klöden (RadioShack) has jumped up from 12th to third, while Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) drops from second to fourth.
Robert Gesink (Rabobank) and Chris Horner (Team RadioShack) also benefit from their high finishes in Pais Vasco, going from 15th to fifth and 21st to sixth respectively. Tom Boonen (QuickStep, 4th to 7th), Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team, fifth to eighth) and Paris-Nice winner Tony Martin (HTC Highroad, sixth to ninth) all drop back due to relatively quieter performances of late. Samuel Sanchez’s solid Vuelta al Pais Vasco ride carries him into the top ten.
In the nations’ ranking, Italy moves into the number one slot, replacing Australia at the top. Belgium continues third, while Spain and German swap positions, going to fourth and fifth respectively. The United States and Great Britain slip one place each to eighth and tenth respectively. Ireland remains a solid eleventh out of thirty listed nations, due mainly to Dan Martin’s third overall in the Volta a Catalunya.
Unsurprisingly, Team RadioShack’s strong performance in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco sees it jump from sixth to first in the standings, thanks to Klöden’s win and Horners’ second overall. It displaces the previous top two teams, HTC Highroad and Rabobank.
Johan Van Summeren’s Paris-Roubaix win doesn’t affect the Garmin-Cervélo position of fourth. The team now has 358 points, 107 off that of RadioShack, and will seek to make inroads into that lead in the Ardennes Classics.
Leopard Trek completes the top five, and will also hope to rack up points in the hillier Classics ahead.
