VeloNation spoke to Kenda/5-hour Energy pb Geargrinder Team Director Frankie Andreu before the start of the Amgen Tour of California, when he stated the team's goal of a top 10 finish on the General Classification at the conclusion in Thousand Oaks. The American team has lived up to the task thus far with Shawn Milne sitting in 10th place overall after a strong finish in yesterday's stage.
The finish for stage 2 resembled a typical criterium, something the smaller teams in the race that rule the North American circuit are very much accustomed to. Before the start of today's stage VeloNation spoke to Milne about his solid start in the race, and how he sees the next couple of stages playing out.
You currently sit 10th on GC following the race's first stage, how do you feel about that?
"I feel really good and yesterdays stage was good for me. I like the criterium style finish. I think that this was an advantage for me with so many Euro teams in the race that are not used to this style of racing. And for me the bit of rain on the tarmac was just perfect."
What do you think your chances are for today's stage to Modesto?
"I think my chance for another top ten are good. It is a pretty flat stage and again with a finishing circuit, so I feel really positive that I can keep my top ten for the GC today"
Stage four is a hilly stage. What will your tactics be if you are still 10th in G.C?
"Well Iam more of a all around rider and I like sprint finishing circuits. I think that at this point I have to be realistic and support our team leader for the race Ben Day. You have to know your strengths and weaknesses. So I will stick with mine as a strong sprint finisher."
