The day following the tragic death of Movistar rider Xavier Tondo, his team has announced that a service will be held at the Pabellón Municipal de los Deportes de Olot in Girona, Spain Wednesday May 25th at 13:00 CET, where relatives, friends and all of those close to the rider can pay their respects.
Tondo was staying at a ski resort in southern Spain and, as he was preparing to go training with teammate Benat Intxausti, the tragic event occurred. The cyclists were in Tondo’s car leaving the resort when the rider exited the vehicle and became trapped between his car and the garage door.
Adding to the extreme sadness of the event, earlier this year Tondo did the sport he loved a great service by helping police snare a doping ring in his home country of Spain. He passed on information to authorities after he was offered banned products. His decision to "do the right thing" made the extremely likeable, optimistic rider a beacon of hope in what has been a difficult time for cycling.
Due to their intense grief, Tondo's family has requested fans respect their wish to have a private ceremony for family members only later that evening, where his body will be cremated.
