Gilbert holds off Contador in latest UCI WorldTour rankings

Spain takes over as top country

Philippe GilbertAlberto Contador’s overall victory plus two stage wins in the Giro d’Italia have seen him race up the UCI WorldTour rankings, but Belgian Classic specialist Philippe Gilbert has managed to hold on to his number one slot.

Gilbert has a total of 356 points while Contador, who has increased his number to 349 as a result of his Italian Grand Tour success, is now just seven points behind. He has rocketed up from a pre-race ranking of 17th. With CAS apparently deferring his hearing until after the Tour de France, it appears likely that the rider can move into pole position in the standings in July, if not sooner than that.

In fact, the Spaniard could have already been leading had he not gifted stage wins during the Giro to various others, including stage 19 victor Paolo Tiralongo.

Giro runner-up Michele Scarponi (Lampre ISD) is one point behind the Spaniard, and has moved from sixth to third.

As might be expected, those who didn’t ride the Giro have slid down the rankings. Fabian Cancellara has gone from second to fourth, Cadel Evans drops from third to fifth, and Matt Goss slips four places to eighth. Andreas Klöden and Tony Martin have also moved downwards, from fifth to ninth and from seventh to tenth respectively.

There’s better news for Giro riders Joaquin Rodriguez and and Vincenzo Nibali. The Catalan rider was 13th but is now up to sixth, courtesy of his fifth-place finish in Italy. Nibali’s third overall sees him jump 17 places to seventh.

There is also no change at the top of the teams classification, with HTC Highroad remaining in the driving seat. It has 604 points, almost 100 clear of Saxo Bank SunGard, which jumps from tenth to second as a result of Contador’s Giro success.

That move displaces Leopard Trek, Team RadioShack and Omega Pharma Lotto, who each slide down a place from their previous positions of second through fourth.

The other big mover is Lampre-ISD, which goes from eleventh to sixth. This is mainly thanks to Michele Scarponi’s second overall in the Giro.

Contador’s success plus the four other stage wins achieved by Spanish riders in the Giro elevate their country from third to first. Both it and Italy overtake the previous leader, Belgium, and also move above Australia. Germany (5th) , the Netherlands (6th) and Switzerland (7th) remain unchanged; France and the USA swop places, and Great Britain stays tenth.

There’s scope for more changes in June due to the holding of two WorldTour events. The first is the Criterium du Dauphine, which takes place from June 5th - 12th. The second is the Tour de Suisse, which will be held this year between June 11th to 19th.
