Belgian rider had just received new Quick Step contract

Guillaume Van KeirsbulckOn the same day his Quick Step team confirmed that it had agreed to extend his contract until 2013, Guillaume Van Keirsbulck’s joy disappeared when he learned that his 20 year old girlfriend was killed in a car accident.

Details are scarce at present but according to Sporza, the collision took place in Egem in West-Vlaanderen. It involved an oncoming motorbike, which hit the car. Van Keirsbulck and the motorbike rider were killed at the scene, while the pillion passenger succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

Van Keirsbulk is one of the most promising young Belgian riders. The first year pro is just 20 years of age and won the junior Paris-Roubaix race in 2009.

Earlier today his team confirmed that he, Dries Devenyns and Kristof Vandewalle would remain in Quick Step colours for another two and a half years.

We at VeloNation would like to express our sympathies to him and his girlfriend’s family at this tragic time.
