Belgian to lead BMC Racing Team in Spanish classic after showing fine form

Greg Van AvermaetGreg Van Avermaet will be the protected leader on Saturday when the BMC Racing Team aims to continue their successful run of late at the San Sebastián classic. Following on from their Tour de France victory with Cadel Evans, Van Avermaet yesterday continued the team’s winning streak by taking the final stage and the overall victory in the Tour de Wallonie.

"On paper, Greg is definitely our guy to ride for," Assistant Director Michael Sayers said speaking about the Spanish race. "He's on fantastic form."

After his performance at Wallonie and looking forward to San Sebastián, the 26 year old said, "Hopefully I can recover in two days. We'll see. Hopefully I'll have good legs on Saturday. With the win in Wallonie, my confidence is good."

Van Avermaet made the switch to the American team this year after spending four years on Omega Pharma – Lotto. To date he has three victories this season while noticeably finishing seventh in the Liège Bastogne Liège Classic.

Mathias Frank and Martin Kohler, two teammates who helped Van Avermaet to the top of the podium this week, will support him while Tour de France finisher Amaël Moinard is also expected to play a vital role.

Van Avermaet completed last year’s San Sebastián classic in eleventh place.

BMC Racing Team San Sebastián Roster: Greg Van Avermaet, Yannick Eijssen, Mathias Frank, Martin Kohler, Karsten Kroon, Amaël Moinard, Johann Tschopp and Simon Zahner.
